Joint Pain Caused By Osteoporosis

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis refers to a condition which is characterized by the gradual loss of bone mass. Individuals who suffer from osteoporosis have bones which gradually become less dense, making them highly susceptible to fractures. Individuals with severe osteoporosis can suffer a fractured bone from even a relatively small force or injury. In addition, osteoporosis also commonly results in joint pain, back pain, and a loss of height. If you suffer from chronic joint pain or any other type of pain caused by osteoporosis, you may want to speak with a pain doctor as soon as possible.

Osteoporosis commonly results in joint pain. In severe cases, the joint pain may be so strong that it can become difficult to walk. Studies have identified several risk factors for developing osteoporosis including:

  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Having a very small frame
  • Smoking
  • Low calcium intake
  • Lack of exercise

Severe osteoporosis may also lead to a condition called kyphosis. Individuals with kyphosis experience spinal compression fractures which can result in severe back pain.

Treatments

Osteoporosis can result in joint pain and fractures even when doing simple and seemingly safe movements like lifting a bag of groceries or getting out of your car. That means that joint pain caused by osteoporosis can be a severe and life-altering condition. Over the counter pain medication may be helpful if the joint pain is not too severe. However, in many cases, the pain may be too severe to be adequately remedied by over the counter medication.

Surgeries for individuals with osteoporosis are available. You should speak with a doctor to determine if these may be a good choice for you. Two common surgeries used to treat compression fractures include vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
