Pain After Cervical Surgery

After a cervical spine surgery, you may find that pain continues to persist after the operation. The philosophy behind most back surgeries is to help relax a joint that may have been inflamed, or taking the pressure off of a pinched nerve. There could have been many reasons as to why your pain continued, and most of the time, it is usually not because of an error from the surgery you had before. The common factors that cause pain after a surgery include pressure on a nerve persisting after operation, recurrent or residual disc herniation, spinal muscular reconditioning, altered joint mobility, and joint hypermobility with instability. Sometimes the daily tasks you may have to take after the operation put too much pressure on the recovering tissue and nerve, re-opening painful areas.

Whatever the case, you expected to come away from the cervical surgery pain-free only to feel like you are back at step one. Don’t lose hope, there are still a variety of treatments that may aid you in relieving or preventing the back pain. What is correct for you will depend on how often you feel the pain and what type of pain it is. Each patient must be treated on a case-by-case basis. Usually, patients experience chronic back pain, a lingering ache in their back or legs, or a sharp pain at the waist area. Experiencing pain after a surgery does not mean you have to take another surgery right away. Non-invasive methods such as physical therapy or non-invasive spinal manipulation may be the right choice for relieving your pain.
